For years the Lanikai Pill Box has been a “must experience” trail hike on the windward side of Oahu. Known for its expansive and breath taking views, its recently become a concern of residents and visitors.
We originally featured this story on our FACEBOOK which drew many opinions on whether or not to save and repair or condemn and remove.
These structures have been around since the World War 1&2 Era in which they were used as a means to detect enemy planes and ships. Over the years, due to excess and unregulated amounts of visitors, the Pillboxes have seen many battles themselves from graffiti, corrosion, dumping and more.
Chris Lee (our representative) has spent his entire life, as many of residents have, climbing up to these cement platforms to enjoy the sights and a cool breeze. In order to preserve this for future generations as well as visitors, the state plans to invest around $200,000 in costs associated with repairs.
There is no date set for when the actual repairs will take place. We will update once we know more.
